CHARACTER INFO
Name: Rennuid Tathviel
Canon: original character. The project's name The God We Dare Not Speak Of, though. tgod for short.
Canon Point: a few weeks into regularly gazing into the Mirror of Serrosperri in secret.
Age: 150 (....early 20's equivalent)
Species: Elf
History:
cw for grooming and cults
Rennuid used to be the head of a weird cult deep in the woods, devoted to a god of fate with a name only Rennuid was allowed to know. Two complicating factors there: it wasn't actually a god, but a bizarre, deathless monster, and Rennuid was quite a bit more to it than a priest.
The monster's true name was Allegory, and the two were practically spouses, which could have been perfectly fine, except for all of the lying and manipulation and the fact the romantic relationship began when Rennuid was the equivalent of a young teenager.
One day, a knight errant named GllChk visited Rennuid's temple. He came hunting the truth behind a fairytale, of a sealed monster named 'As-It-Follows; a wily and utterly amoral creature as old as words, that would nestle in the very fates of places and people to sustain itself.
Allegory and As-It-Follows, of course, were one and the same. GllChk attempted to approach the situation peacefully, but came to blows first with the priest, and then the monster. The truth of its "divinity" was outed to all, and Allegory was slain-- but with its death rattle, it put a terrible curse on Rennuid for his betrayal. Rennuid had opened the path for GllChk to its innermost lair where its true self resided, you see-- a secret sanctum where only Rennuid was allowed.
In the aftermath, GllChk took a despondent Rennuid in as a travelling companion. Things and stuff happened, most recently including Rennuid habitually using a dangerous magic mirror to escape the increasing, daily pain caused by the curse.
Personality:
✽ What is your character's main motivation? What drives them and keeps them going?
Penitence. Regret? Right now, he's just trying to live with himself after a ruinous paradigm shift. Rennuid's quite lost. In lieu of a steady reason to keep going, he tells himself: I'll keep doing it all because of GllChk. Whether that be positive or negative at the time.
✽ What is their biggest regret? Why?
Getting other people involved in his mess with Allegory.
There were many vulnerable people, who joined the Cult at Gorfuin. People with no one, or nowhere to go. He tried his best to do well by his 'flock,' but Rennuid's self-importance, unaddressed damage and capacity for cruelty, alongside Allegory's appetite for control and very literal need to cause 'momentous things' to happen... all very definitively hurt people, in ways both overt and insidious.
He fled, after Allegory's death. He has not been able to bring himself to face them, or his own family.
✽ What is their worst fear? Their greatest comfort?
You'd think it would be the looming, angry spectre of that probable death curse, but Rennuid's most frightened of the person he's capable of being.
Being alone is also up there, as his greatest comfort generally comes from other people. He likes feeling like he's coming to understand another person, know what makes them tick-- it makes him feel less trapped, inside himself.
✽ Top three strengths?
+ Sensitive and empathic.
+ Extremely... extremely passionate.
+ though he doesn't see it in himself, Rennuid is very adaptable, with a good head for making the best of suboptimal situations. he kept an isolated settlement of 50~ in a drafty old ruin going for fifty years, for instance.
✽ Top three weaknesses?
- When he's not putting on airs and acting like he's above it all, he's actually quite an anxious person, hungry for reassurance.
- Cagey as all hell.
- Deep poisoned well of spite simmering in his heart that is capable of erupting like a geyser.
✽ What was their last lie?
"I'm just going to lay down for a little while and get some sleep, GllChk."
Inventory:
▪︎ your average mundane hunting knife.
▪︎ hairpin with 4 murky orbs that are.. star gems? maybe. a gift from Allegory made from its own eyes, and the focus Rennuid uses for his magic.
▪︎ the mirror of serrosperri. an ornate hand mirror that will show you Very Immersively what your life could have looked like, in different timelines. Rennuid understands very little about it, beyond rumors of it being dangerous.
...prolonged use makes people start to forget who you are, persisting until you quit using it for at least a week. so make sure only to take a short peek! who knows what happens if you gaze long enough EVERYONE forgets you...
(i know what happens. it eats your lifeforce to grow in power.)
anyway i'd be totally game for the mirror doing jack shit and being totally cloudy and useless ingame.
Abilities:
- elven longevity. there's literally nothing else special about tgod elves, though, besides generally struggling to grow a non-patchy beard and a penchant for a high-meat diet due to being descended from trolls.
- Can see perfectly well in the dark, such that Rennuid sometimes has trouble telling the difference between night and day. This is a supernatural ability granted by Allegory, not innate.
- Spiders instinctively like him and will crawl on or generally flock to be near him. He cannot control it, sorry. But at least he'll never get bit! ...all other animals... instinctively Do Not like him.
- mist form! for up a minute (that's pushing it), Rennuid's body can turn to a curling cloud of... mist? smoke? vapor, anyway-- and move around in ways he obviously normally can't. he's gone through quarter-sized gaps before like this. fans are impassable. if he tries it will be deeply injurious.
- He's basically a generic brand DnD 5e warlock with his first level in sorcerer. In context he's called a Conduit Mage, someone most skilled at drawing and shaping power from a source outside themselves. But uh. As an escaped DnD character his powers are inspired by.. spell lists ive given him...
tl;dr crunchy wizard bullshit:
- rennuid's able to hold his own in a fight using magic, though better at range than close by. he relies on being agile, because he is neither physically strong nor sturdy.
- if i had to pick an rpg element for him, it's darkness. he uses 0 kinds of any other "elemental" magic. a wizard who CAN'T set things on fire with his mind... whomp whomp.
- he can do illusions, summon obscuring fog, do small buffs and debuffs that don't actually have force and amount to weighting luck, and some Power Word: Fuck You type spells (he Cannot do power word die). basically, if it feels appropriate for the disciple of a god of fate that's actually a sentient literary concept slash horrible eelsnake thing...
- Rennuid retains these abilities because Allegory's power has physically accumulated in his body over the last 70~ years. unbeknowst to rennuid, the very reason he's still a competent sorcerer is where the curse that's killing him dwells.
- he very much could get a new patron for him to be the conduit of. he has never thought of this. allegory's power would be kind of in the way, though, and would cause problems.
- i'd put him on the level of a 2nd job elsword player character for ""power level""? except his fate is either "keep this power and also keep dying" or start losing some of those knockoff warlock levels.
